Lore

  • Biography
  • Previous Bio
The only thing more important to Gragas than fighting is drinking. His unquenchable thirst for stronger ale has led him in search of the most potent and unconventional ingredients to toss in his still. Impulsive and unpredictable, this rowdy carouser loves cracking kegs as much as cracking heads. Thanks to his strange brews and temperamental nature, drinking with Gragas is always a risky proposition.

Gragas has an eternal love of good drink, but his massive constitution prevented him from reaching a divine state of intoxication. One night, when he had drained all the kegs and was left wanting, Gragas was struck by a thought rather than the usual barstool: why couldn't he brew himself something that would finally get him truly drunk? It was then that he vowed to create the ultimate ale.

Gragas' quest eventually brought him to the Freljord, where the promise of acquiring the purest arctic water for his recipe led him into uncharted glacial wastes. While lost in an unyielding blizzard, Gragas stumbled upon a great howling abyss. There he found it: a flawless shard of ice unlike anything he had ever seen. Not only did this unmelting shard imbue his lager with incredible properties, but it also had a handy side effect - it kept the mixture chilled at the perfect serving temperature.

Under the spell of his new concoction, Gragas headed for civilization, eager to share the fermented fruits of his labor. As fate would have it, the first gathering to catch Gragas' bleary eyes would shape the future of the Freljord. He blundered into a deteriorating negotiation between two tribes discussing an alliance with  Ashe. Though Ashe welcomed a break in the tension, the other warriors bristled at the intrusion and hurled insults at the drunken oaf. True to his nature, Gragas replied with a diplomatic headbutt, setting off a brawl matched only in the legends of the Freljord.

When the fallen from that great melee finally awoke, Ashe proposed a friendly drink as an alternative to fighting. With their tempers doused in suds, the two tribes, formerly on the brink of war, bonded over a common love of Gragas' brew. Although strife was averted and Gragas hailed a hero, he still had not achieved his dream of drunken blissfulness. So once more, he set off to wander the tundra in search of ingredients for Runeterra's perfect pint.

"Now this'll put hair on your chest!"

-  Gragas

The foothills of the Great Barrier are home to the hardiest people found anywhere on Valoran. Only those with great fortitude and endurance dwell in what is perhaps the most rugged and unforgiving environment anywhere on the face ofRuneterra. It is here that the mighty Gragas keeps permanent residence, living south of Noxus. This behemoth of a man has long eschewed the rigors of civilization for what he calls his "slice of paradise"; he has no neighbors to bother him and plenty of space to pursue his life's ambition - brewing. Grogs, ales, meads, and wine - nothing is beyond his skill to brew. What makes Gragas a truly special brewmaster, however, is his proximity to a large and powerful nexus.

The magic of this nexus has seeped into his fermented creations, and Gragas has consumed enough of his own poison over the years to slake the thirst of an army. This arcane alcohol has caused Gragas to swell both in height and girth; he looms over the tallest of men and boasts nearly twice their width. To complement his immoderate size, Gragas has developed an ornery temper - one fueled by liquor and raw magic. His infrequent sojourns into Noxus for supplies always unfold the same way: Gragas enters a Noxian tavern, Gragas gets into several fights, Gragas lays out countless citizens, and finally Gragas flees for the foothills with Noxian constables in hot - though reluctant - pursuit. His misadventures have garnered him the attention of several summoners in the League of Legends, and he is now a willing champion in the arenas...doling out hard liquor and harder fists.

"The Rabble Rouser leaves a path of drunken destruction in his wake, both in the Fields of Justice and off."

Patch History

v7.2

Armor increased. Heal on passive increased.

Gragas has been struggling to survive his first clear in the post-pre-season jungle; camps with multiple monsters (which he should excel at clearing) proved particularly difficult to handle. Beefing up the Rabble Rouser’s early game enables him to more safely finish his first clears and ramp up through the rest of the game.

HEAL ON CAST : 4% 6% of maximum health

v6.17
E cooldown up. R now has a fixed travel time.

Before we get into the specifics of our Gragas changes, we want to call out that our work here is tied closely to work on another champion: Rek’Sai. These champs have a stranglehold on the professional jungle scene due to how early their shared gameplay of ‘durable mobile ganker’ comes online. Specifically, the cooldown of their mobility tools (which double as their initiation tools) is too low at early ranks. Body Slam and Tunnel should present meaningful choices to Gragas and Rek’Sai: “Do I use E to duck past an enemy ward, or do I save it to make a play?” Currently, the answer is “I can do both.” This is fine later on once enemies have access to their own mobility tools, but plays out oppressively in the early game. We’re increasing the cooldown on Body Slam and Tunnel to force Gragas and Rek’Sai to make tougher choices with their skills at the start of a match.

Zooming back in on Gragas, we’re also reining in the reliability of close-quarters ult casts. When Gragas lobs Explosive Cask onto himself, opponents have literally no time to react (the barrel doesn’t even show up) before being sent flying. In terms of ganking, it doesn’t actually matter whether opponents dodge Body Slam or not, since Graggy only needs to close the distance to guarantee his ult’s knockback. Now that Explosive Cask has a fixed travel time, Gragas is going to have to depend on landing his E stun to create the setup plays he’s used to. Which is now slightly easier, because we fixed a bug that was causing Body Slam to miss.

TRAVEL TIME : 0 - 0.58 seconds (based on distance) 0.55 seconds

v6.3
Q's snap-cast slows for the full duration. W channels faster and deals AoE damage.

It hasn't been too long since Gragas was top dog of jungle, but these days he's sitting at the bottom of the barrel. Graggy's strategic niche as a disengage jungler is still there, so we're boosting his early reliability and clear speed to help compete against the rest of the lineup.

Barrel Roll.png Q - Barrel Roll

SLOW DURATION : 1.3 - 2 seconds over the duration 2 seconds

Drunken Rage.png W - Drunken Rage

CHANNEL TIME : 1 second 0.75 seconds
NEW DRINKING PROBLEMS : Drunken Rage's on-hit now deals damage in a 250 unit radius around the primary target

v5.17
W damage down.

Gragas has been a dominating jungle force in professional play with no real signs of slowing down. In a post 5.16 world where Cinderhulk’s mid-game spike is higher and health is more ever present as a defensive stat Gragas benefits doubly, bolstering his sustain while making his high damage from Drunken Rage even more effective against front-lines and fighters that might attempt to keep him off carries. While still potent for his gank pressure and (sometimes literal) fight-turning ultimate, hitting Gragas’ damage output makes sense for our goals of increasing diversity among picks in the jungle.

v5.12
Health Regen down. Q slows less, but scales with duration as well.

"Graggy's been sitting on top of the competition for quite a while now due to his slow-yet-inevitable chain of locking his targets down and excessive sustain combining to make a grinding experience that's difficult to interact with. Cutting regeneration and the effectiveness of his quick-cast Barrel serve to break up his repeated CC/Gank cycles and offer opportunities for his opponents to fight back."

    • LET IT SIT FOR A WHILE : Barrel Roll's slow duration now also increases up to 150% as the cask ferments over 2 seconds

v5.10
Non-fat body slams.

"Following up on our Cinderhulk changes, we still think 'ol Graggy's taking up too much space in the jungle, so we're trimming some fat (not literally - that's gross) where we can. This might not be the change that gives jungle competitors some space to breathe, but at least letting his belly hitbox match the visuals is a good first step."

v5.5

Base mana up, damage cap versus monsters also up.

"While not always thought of primarily as a Jungler, with the Buff Barge 2K15 docking at Jungle Island we thought it'd be a great time to pull back some of Graggy's stat restrictions to help drink Gromp and his friends under the table. "

v5.3 BARREL SLOWS FOR MORE.

"Gragas's last round of nerfs weighed heavy on his effectiveness against minion waves, so we wanted to give him better incentives to roll out the barrel against champions. This buff's on the house. "

  • SPLASH : The following champions have received updated base splashes (click the portraits for the full image!)

v4.14
Gragas has new recommended items (HELLO LICH BANE) and his E always carries him the maximum distance.

  • BodySlam.jpg E - Body Slam
    • ALL IN THE HIPS Gragas now always travels the full distance in the direction of the cast (still stops on first target he hits)

v4.13
NO MORE OPEN BAR. Gragas pays mana for his drunkenness and Q deals less damage to minions.

"Way back when we gave Gragas a gameplay update, we wanted to solve the thematic problem where a big fat drunken brawler was being played as a backline mage who throws barrels for days. These changes mean Gragas works best when he's scrapping in the middle of a fight, and not hiding like a sissy."
  • BarrelRoll.jpg Q - Barrel Roll
    • NEW GRAGGY LIGHT Now does 70% damage to minions
  • DrunkenRage.jpg W - Drunken Rage
    • NEW COST Now costs 30 mana at all ranks
    • COOLDOWN 8/7.5/6/6.5/6 seconds ⇒ 8/7/6/5/4 seconds
    • DAMAGE REDUCTION 3 seconds ⇒ 2.5 seconds
    • SNEAKY DRINKING Fixed a bug where Drunken Rage could be used twice in a row if Gragas was interrupted as soon as he started drinking
    • BRAWLING ETIQUETTE Fixed a bug where Drunken Rage would sometimes not play the proper keg smash animation on attack
  • BodySlam.jpg E - Body Slam
    • BUGFIXED BELLY Fixed a bug where Body Slam would occasionally fail to work when Gragas leveled it first or second

v4.10 "Graggy's gotten better at drinking under fire. This change means Gragas will only have to worry about losing the damage buff if he's interrupted mid-drink, but he'll feel better about using W to tank out a brawl."

  • DrunkenRage.jpg W - Drunken Rage
    • "NEW" FERMENTED: Gragas no longer loses the damage reduction if he is interrupted during his drink
    • CLARITY: Updated tooltip to specify that the percentage damage against monsters is capped at 250

v4.7
Graggy and his barrels have hit the gym. Barrel Roll grants vision (don't ask how that relates to going to the gym), and Gragas can throw his Explosive Cask further.

"Pre-update, Gragas liked his R and Q more for their target erasing potential than their utility and displacement. Now that Graggy isn't one-shotting entire teams with barrels, we can buff up his other strengths to emphasize his barrel-throwing play-making power."

  • BarrelRoll.jpg Q - Barrel Roll
    • "NEW" UTILITY: Grants vision after it reaches its destination
    • CLARITY: Reduced size of cast indicator to better represent the actual radius
  • DrunkenRage.jpg W - Drunken Rage
    • BUGFIX: Buff no longer consumed on hitting a ward
  • ExplosiveCask.jpg R - Explosive Cask
    • RANGE: 1050 ⇒ 1150
    • CLARITY: Reduced size of cast indicator to better represent the actual radius

v4.6
Now that Gragas is a full-on drunken brawler, he needs a little help in the mid-fight mobility department.

  • DrunkenRage.jpg W - Drunken Rage
    • REMOVED SELF SLOW: Gragas' movement speed is slowed while channeling

v4.5
Gragas gained stronger close-combat abilities! Drunken Rage now empowers his next attack to deal additional magic damage (plus a large portion of the target's maximum health) and Body Slam stuns and knocks back stricken foes. In exchange, Graggy's lost some of his long-range damage in both Barrel Roll (although Barrel Roll now slows movement speed) and Explosive Cask. Gragas just makes more sense as a fat, scrappy brawler than a long-range...barrel...sniper?

"When we initially designed Gragas, we intended for him to be a drunken brawler who jumped into the fight to mess things up. As players began to master him, however, they focused more on his high ability power ratios and sniping potential while relying on Body Slam and Drunken Rage to get away. While we like to support emergent strategies for champions, playing Gragas like a long-range mage created some very imbalanced situations where either he could one-shot his opponents (success) or he couldn't (failure) and therefore became more sad than drunk. With this rework, Gragas should deliver on the core fantasy of a tanky drunkard who takes on his foes belly first."

v4.3
We lowered Body Slam’s AD ratio at early levels and reduced Explosive Cask’s AP ratio.

“Short-term, we’re making these changes to slightly tone down Gragas’ overall power curve without making him “Old and Busted.” In future patches we’ll look at Gragas and make changes that leave him feeling like more of a drunken brawler than a fat mage.”

v3.14
25/11/2013 Gameplay Hotfix

  • Fixed a bug where Gragas’ Barrel Roll became unavailable if Gragas died immediately after throwing his barrel

v3.14
Summary: Barrel Roll's cast range has been decreased, but to compensate we've slightly changed the mechanics of the ability. Now, if a player continually presses the hotkey for Barrel Roll just as the barrel reaches its destination, it will immediately explode on arrival. Body Slam now deals full damage to all targets hit and has a longer cooldown that's cut in half whenever Gragas collides with a unit.

Context: We want to reward Gragas for fighting strategically in close combat as opposed to sniping opponents with his barrel. The changes to Body Slam encourage Gragas to get into the fight if he wants to hit his full damage potential and maximize his mobility.

  • Q - Barrel Roll
    • Now has a small buffer before the barrel reaches its destination (not when Gragas casts it) where Barrel Roll can be activated again to explode on arrival
