  • Previous Bio
As unpredictable as he is brutal, the dethroned reaver king known as Gangplank is feared far and wide. Where he goes, death and ruin follow, and such is his infamy and reputation that the merest sight of his black sails on the horizon causes panic among even the hardiest crew.

Having grown rich preying upon the trade routes of the Twelve Seas, Gangplank has made himself many powerful enemies. In Ionia, he incurred the wrath of the deadly Order of Shadow after ransacking the Temple of the Jagged Knife, and it is said that the  Grand General of Noxus himself has sworn to see Gangplank torn asunder after the pirate stole the Leviathan, Swain’s personal warship and the pride of the Noxian fleet.

While Gangplank has incurred the wrath of many, none have yet been able to bring him to justice, despite assassins, bounty hunters, and entire armadas being sent after him. He takes grim pleasure in the ever-increasing rewards posted for his head, and makes sure to nail them to the Bounty Board in Bilgewater for all to see whenever he returns to port, his ships heavy with loot.

In recent times, Gangplank has been brought down by the machinations of the bounty hunter  Miss Fortune. His ship was destroyed with all of Bilgewater watching, killing his crew and shattering his aura of invincibility. Now that they have seen he is vulnerable, the gangs of Bilgewater have risen up, fighting amongst themselves to claim dominion over the port city.

Despite receiving horrific injuries in the explosion, Gangplank survived. Sporting a multitude of fresh scars, and with a newly crafted metal arm to replace his amputated limb, he is now determined to rebuild his strength, reclaim what he sees as rightfully his – and to ruthlessly punish all those who turned against him.

I was cutting throats and sinking Noxian war galleys when you were still pissing your britches, boy. You don’t want to take me on.

-  Gangplank

BLOOD IN THE WATER

The massive Noxian war captain shuddered and dropped his axe as Gangplank rammed his cutlass deep into the man’s gut. Blood bubbled from the warrior’s tattooed lips as he mouthed an unheard curse.

Gangplank pulled his blade free with a sneer and shoved the dying man to the deck. He collapsed in a clatter of heavy armor, his blood mingling with the seawater sloshing across the war galley’s foredeck. The black-painted hull of Gangplank’s ship loomed above, the two vessels locked together with boarding grapples and lines.

Gangplank’s black and gold teeth gritted in suppressed pain – the Noxian had almost bested him. Nevertheless, he refused to let his crew see his weakness, forcing his lips into a wicked smile.

Wind and rain whipping at him, he turned to survey the rest of the Noxians. He’d issued a blood-challenge to the enemy captain, and now that he’d won, their will to fight evaporated.

“This ship is now mine” Gangplank roared, loud enough to be heard over the driving gale. “Does anyone else have anything to say on the matter?”

One of the Noxians, a huge warrior with blood-cult tattoos upon his face and garbed in spiked armor glared at Gangplank.

“We are sons of Noxus” he bellowed. “We would all gladly die before we let our ship be taken by the likes of you!”

Gangplank frowned, then shrugged.

“Fair enough” he said, and turned away.

Gangplank favored his crew with a vicious smile.

“Kill them all” he roared. “And burn their ship to the waterline!”

Gangplank was born the son of the dread pirate captain Vincent the Shadow - one of the most wealthy and feared pirates in all of Blue Flame Island. One might think this would have spoiled the boy with a cushioned life of privilege, but the truth is quite the opposite. Growing up in the city of Bilgewater isn't easy; pirates are not known for their compassion, and that most certainly extends to their families. Vincent wanted his son to grow up tough and strong, so he was extremely hard on the young Gangplank. Even as a child, Gangplank was as mean as a snake and is said to have slept with his eyes open. As he grew, the young man rapidly became the most ruthless and feared pirate in all of Bilgewater, and his daddy was never more proud than on the day of his son's eighteenth birthday - when Gangplank stabbed his old man in the back and claimed the famed pirate ship, the Dead Pool, for his own.

The continent of Valoran, however, is a dangerous place for pirates; Gangplank could read the writing on the wall. The den of pirates known as Bilgewater would soon be pulled down by the undertow of Valoranian politics and the Institute of War. It was time for Bilgewater to have their own champion to represent them in the League of Legends, and who better than the fiercest pirate of them all? It is said that Gangplank has enough power and favor to claim the title of the Pirate King back home, but that he is simply biding his time and building his reputation as a champion before he returns to a life of piracy.

Yo ho, blow the man down. Or at least shoot him when his back is turned and steal all his booty.

Patch History

v6.17

Base health down. W cost up. R cooldown increased and damage decreased.

Gangplank’s a hypercarry that gets to have his late-game cake and eat it in the early game, too. While most hypercarries have trouble reaching their endgame fantasies (due to soft laning phases or some other vulnerability), GP’s safety, global pressure and enhanced gold generation demand that your team focus all its efforts on answering him. In other words, when you face Gangplank, you win, or you die.

This patch, we’re committing to making Gangplank more closely resemble that traditional ‘hypercarry curve’ by taking a pretty big swing at his safety. While there are a couple changes below, they fall into two distinct buckets. First up, lowering his ability to safely sustain through a tough matchup increases the amount of time he’ll need to get going. Next, reducing his global threat means GP’s less able to scale up when he’s unable to fight his own battles. Gangplank’s still going to be a rewarding and powerful threat when he reaches his late game status, but these changes mean that when you take the Pirate King down, he’s more likely to stay down.

v6.4
Q gold generation down. Maximum barrels down.

No stranger to the Bounty Board (or whatever Patch Notes are in Bilgewater), we've taken a long hard look at Gangplank to find changes that don't just feel like we're picking at threads every two weeks. This patch, it's all about taking down the consistency at which GP hits lategame.

We talk a lot about consistency and reliability (it's mentioned in these patch notes alone about 6 or so times), so let's take a context-break to dive deep. Consistency is just what it sounds like - how often you can rely on a champion pulling off a specific output. Being consistent in and of itself isn't a bad thing - Alistar or Malphite pulling off consistent initiation means that you can come to understand the value they bring as a teammate and start to build expectations around that consistency. What should I pick that goes well with this? How do I take advantage of their reliable output?

When a champion's output is damage, that's when things can get a little trickier. Are you a champion with a consistently powerful late-game, ala Vayne? Then your early game is risky. Are you a champion with consistently powerful early-game, like Lee Sin? Then your success in the late-game isn't a sure thing. It's at the intersections of power spikes and power dips (oh god what's the opposite of a spike) that much of League's interaction occurs - turning most games into 'Can I take advantage of my power before my opponent can take advantage of theirs?'

When we apply this concept to Gangplank, it's easy to see why he's been a headache to balance. Even when teams assign the appropriate amount of pressure to attempt to stunt his growth, Cannon Barrage's global range and Parrrley's plundering make it impossible to keep him off of gold, turning him into a threat no matter what you throw at him. With that in mind, chipping away at the consistency with which he can accrue that advantage (and the consistency of his barrel chains in teamfights) means that when you keep the Dead Man down, he stays down.

Cannon Barrage.png R - Cannon Barrage

REMOVED ANOTHER ONE : No longer increases the maximum number of barrels per rank

v6.2
R's cooldown is up across the board.

We're very aware that Gangplank has a recurring guest slot on the patch notes, but he continues to be one of our highest performing champions across quite a few power metrics. To be fair, however, with each change we've gone medium to light, as we know how fickle champion viability can be in both perception and objective power. Today we're chipping down Cannon Barrage's global presence to keep it in line with other global ultimates, which should also force Gangplank to value his ult timing more carefully.

Cannon Barrage.png R - Cannon Barrage

COOLDOWN : [140/130/120 seconds] 160/150/140 seconds

v6.1
Passive ratio down, duration increased.

As history would imply, Gangplank is a hard man to keep down. Despite chipping away at his explosive area-of-effect damage, GP remains above the curve in the laning phase thanks to Trial by Fire's incredible damage output (especially when reset with Powder Kegs). With Gangplank's hyper-scaling potential, it didn't make much sense for him to also shove opponents out of lane like he owned the place. So we're adjusting.

Trial by Fire.png Passive - Trial by Fire

PASSIVE DURATION : [1.5 seconds] 2.5 seconds
TICKS : [6] 10 (damage per tick reduced; total damage unchanged)
RATIO : [1.2 bonus attack damage] 1.0 bonus attack damage

v5.21
Base health down, health per level up. Q costs less, but no longer refunds mana.

Gangplank's laning is as efficient as it is deadly, granting him guaranteed access to gold with little interaction available to his opposition. Sure, it just starts with a few harmless Q's for extra cash, but then it leads to a single barrel clearing the caster minions before ending in chain-barrels to vacuum entire waves. This nasty slippery slope of Parrrleys ultimately leaves GP swimming in silver serpents and big-ticket upgrades, out-statting anyone that gets in his way.

This chain of events feels pretty awesome when Gangplank's the one doing it, but often leaves his opponents scrambling to catch up. These changes provide a wrench to toss into his plans, forcing him to run out of gas (or life) for applying pressure to his farm-centric game plan. He'll still terrorize the seas (eventually), but now the responsibility of 'shutting him down' feels more realistic.

v5.18
Powder Keg’s bonus damage to champions and armor penetration down.

Still vengeful, still eating citrus and still going strong, Gangplank’s power levels seems to be unhindered by our attempts to cap him in 5.17. Often you’ll find in the Patch Notes we talk about hitting a champion’s weakness to keep their strengths intact - for GP however, his strength is simply too strong. The amount that barrels contribute to his ability to take over a game is entirely too high in the end-game, so we’re hitting both the base and penetration to soften his blows against squishies and meatballs alike.

BONUS DAMAGE TO CHAMPIONS : [80/110/140/170/200] 60/90/120/150/180
ARMOR PENETRATION : [50%] 40%

v5.17
Barrels take slightly longer to place. E's armor penetration down.

Hell-bent on revenge for his humiliation in front of Bilgewater, Gangplank’s currently taking his frustrations out on anyone unlucky to be caught by his Powder Kegs. While they can be tricky to pull off, Gangplank (in true pirate fashion) can always ‘rig’ the game in duels, using the near-instant cast time to stack multiple kegs in a small area to ensure his opponent loses an enormous chunk of health no matter which keg they try to disarm. It’s still early to understand what effect GP has on the game at large, but shaving power from his Kegs is the first step to keeping his explosive potential in check.

Powder Keg.png E - Powder Keg

COMBO BREAKER : Delay between casts increased by 0.25 seconds
ARMOR PENETRATION : [60%] 50%

v5.15 Gangplank is back. Q auto-acquires at a much smaller radius. Gangplank gets steady Silver Serpents on alternate maps.
